I’ve always had Escort Passports and they’ve worked really well for me. Have had the 9500iX for over 6 years now and I am thinking of upgrading. Recently it’s been been giving a lot of false alerts (Thank you Honda/Acura BLIS) and I don’t want to turn off K band as the local PD uses it. Not willing to spend over $500 for the directional ones a la V1. This has been getting some solid reviews(Forums, Radar blogs, Amazon) so wanted to know if anyone has positive experience with the R3

Looks like it’s getting some great reviews.

I think the V1 is $400 but I could be wrong

You’re right. I haven’t checked in a while. I was thinking Escort Max360 and V1 were close.

OK now I’m in a conundrum. I am not sure how good the V1's filtering is because some of my friends say it beeps for everything and anything because there is no GPS-based filtering. I drive 80% suburbs/small city 20% highway so I don’t need extreme range. Hmmmmmm

Mine is a bit older and it has issues with picking up blind-spot radars, If I’m too close to my fathers 7-series it lights up like a christmas tree, but I think the newer ones are better at filtering out those. It’s entirely possible that’s what your friends V1 is doing.

OK now have to research updated V1 vs Uniden R3 comparisons. Back to the forums, then.

I have a V1 and I love it. It does indicate for some car proximity radar, but after enabling the proper setting (which I can’t remember off the top of my head) those aren’t nearly as prevalent as it was out of the box. It does not offer GPS based blocking - that is a philosophy decision from Valentine - but I’m ok with that. Indications from automatic door openers don’t bother me too much, and since the V1 tells you how many radar sources are being detected (ie “bogeys”) you can see if any additional sources are present... such as an LEO that would be blocked or masked by GPS based filtering.

Now, I pretty much use mine for highway driving, so I can see where you might have different preferences for mostly urban use.

Let us know what you get, and how well it works for you...

I did read that Uniden keeps updating more than Valentine and that seems like a good reason to buy the R3. I am also reading that the V1 works best when paired with some third party app which I am not a fan of. I want a standalone radar detector and that’s it, no phone , Bluetooth stuff no matter how good the accompanying app is. I might only use it when I drive >3 hours which is like 6 times a year.

Thanks for the Insight though. I am just starting research but it might be next year when I get one.

The app is interesting, as it will identify exactly what frequency of radar(s) are being detected, gives different views depending on how you would like to see the info presented, and it opens up certain programming options. Also, you can have the phone set in a discrete location and turn off all the lights on the V1 if you don’t want to advertise the fact that the detector is being used. I have the app, as well as the bluetooth adapter, but I have found that I prefer to use it for changing options and not to use on a daily basis.

I read the review on the Uniden and it looks like a great detector. If I was in the market for a new one, I would give serious consideration to it.

Clarification: I have the V1 app, not the 3rd party app. That one looks interesting; I may have to get it as well...
